A little while ago, I read that Seattle had made it to the #1 spot in online giving for 2011. This article indicates that 273 cities with a population of more than 100,000 were ranked based on per capita online giving. In fact, “the average gift size remained steady in 2011 compared to 2010 at $65, as more than $435 million was donated by people who reside in the 273 major cities.”
And would you believe it: another Washington city, Bellevue, a neighbor to Seattle, is #9!
This certainly illustrates the influence of the internet on generosity practices. I guess it is easier to donate online, than to write a check and put it in the mail. And with the surge in branding (defining the idea, image, logo, or slogan of an organization in a compelling way that easily enables consumers to connect with that organization) and social media, it is no wonder that online donating has increased.
Here’s my challenge to fellow Seattleites: let’s keep Seattle #1 on this list! To everyone else, let’s get your city up on the list!!
