I have written a few times about obstetric fistula in the past– it is such a preventable public health issue and it makes me want to yell from the rooftops so everyone knows about it. If more people know about it, maybe more will be done to advocate for better access to health care for women in developing countries. Of course, it goes deeper than just providing health care- it’s about poverty, gender inequality, human rights… the list goes on.
This week’s article in Parentmap is about Kristie McLean, a cool gal who has decided to help women who suffer from fistula find income generating opportunities. She singlehandedly raised funds to build a hydro-powered turbine mill which grinds grains into flower and provides extra income for women who are trying to get their lives back on track again. I hope you are as inspired as I am by her efforts.
